Mock Solo & Ensemble
Each October, I will assess student progress with a mini recital during their regular drum lesson time. Parents are welcome to attend.
Each student will be provided with a solo music piece to perform during a lesson in October. I refer to this as "Mock Solo & Ensemble," as the format reflects MSBOA's Solo & Ensemble Festival. Students will use the knowledge gained through lessons to practice and work through these specific pieces on their own without any instruction from me. These will be new pieces that the student has not played before. The difficulty level will be within the scope of what we do in the lesson: nothing too simple or complicated. If the student would like to choose a piece, they must show it to me in advance for approval: it must be published music, not an original work of the student, and something that the student has not played before.
The piece will be performed by the student for me to listen to and adjudicate in a three-part performance. I will assign point values for each section just to give you an idea of how a graded musical performance works; however, do not feel intimidated, as this is just for fun and practice! This process typically takes 30-45 minutes, including a workshop to indicate strengths and improvement areas after the performance. The purpose of this is to prepare students for working through a music piece by themselves and problem-solving by going back to the basics when they run into difficulty. My goal is to see how students are able to apply their knowledge and critical-thinking skills. Parents are welcome to attend this lesson to observe the student's progress.
